Happy Labor Day!

We’re not working today to celebrate not working. A few things:

New Jersey’s government was rocked Friday by a New Jersey Globe story alleging the Sherrill administration is investigating Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell for “alleged inappropriate behavior with women” and other ethical lapses. No one is offering more information (if they even have it) so the details remain sketchy. Considering how widely this kind of story can move — national reporters were chatting about it hours after it posted, and Republicans are calling on Caldwell to step down at lieutenant governor — the governor’s office should inform the public about what it knows, sooner rather than later.

Kevin Hardy from Stateline has a story on where in the United States labor unions are growing. Gallup shows support for labor unions up among Dems and the GOP. “More Americans are turning to unions as a bulwark against the rising cost of living, and more public sector workers turned towards unions last year in the wake of some federal actions and federal headwinds,” said Frank Manzo IV, an economist at the left-leaning Illinois Economic Policy Institute.

Debbie White, a nurse and president of Health Professionals and Allied Employees, has commentary for us today on healthcare unions stepping in when laws and regulators cannot: “Operating a hospital is a privilege that carries profound responsibility. Healthcare systems exist to serve the public, not simply to maximize financial returns. When owners choose to operate these essential institutions, they must be held accountable for maintaining safe, reliable access to care.”
