Health: Lilo Stainton today looks at a new Rutgers program that brings dental care to classrooms free of charge for families. The team was in Franklin in Somerset County recently to do check-ups and apply sealants to about 200 kids. Dr. Mary Beth Giacona, a pediatric dentist and associate professor at Rutgers who spearheaded the program, hopes to expand it. “A lot of people put a lot of effort into making this happen and I think it’s going to be one of those true snowball situations where that first little gleam – that first little starter snowball, that took so much time and effort – then just kind of builds as it rolls along under its own momentum,” she told Lilo.

ICE: New Jersey’s Democratic House delegation sent a letter to Homeland Security officials calling for Newark migrant jail Delaney Hall to be shut down, six days after a man detained at the facility died from what the Trump administration says was cardiac arrest. “Whether these deaths occurred inside the facility or shortly after release, Congress has a responsibility to determine whether they stem from system-wide failures in medical care and oversight. If people are dying because they were denied medication, timely treatment, or emergency care, the American people deserve to know. And if ICE has adopted policies that make those deaths less visible, Congress has an obligation to scrutinize them and bring them to a halt,” the letter reads. Our two Dem senators, Cory Booker and Andy Kim, repeated their House colleagues’ call Thusday.

Schools: The Trump administration is moving to revamp the early childhood education program Head Start, with the admin saying the changes will reduce regulatory burdens for pre-Ks nationwide while critics said it’s part of a push to dismantle the program entirely. “Head Start is built around a mission of giving low-income children a path to sustained education and life outcomes,” said Beth Meloy, an early childhood education consultant who worked on the federal government’s Head Start standards. “These changes lack the thoughtfulness that these children deserve.”

Trump: President Donald Trump signed two executive orders on Thursday intended to limit birthright citizenship, weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his attempt to do this. Trump said the Supreme Court ruling was “an unfortunate decision” so “we’re making adjustments” to birthright citizenship, which is included in the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment. These will likely land in court, too.
