Good morning!
What happens if Democrats win control of the House next month?
New Jersey Democrats told us they want more hearings on immigration enforcement, subpoenas, and less money for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Sophie Nieto-Muñoz and Dana DiFilippo talked to House candidates on this issue. Rep. Rob Menendez (D, and lucky enough not to even have a GOP opponent) said their oversight visits to Delaney Hall and shadow hearing on immigration enforcement have all been a signal to voters about what they could expect from a Dem-led Congress.
“Part of the reason you do those is to clearly demonstrate what you would do if you had the gavels and what type of hearings you would have,” Menendez said.
Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R) represents the 2nd District, which flipped from GOP to Dem control during the first Trump midterm. Van Drew is the one who flipped it, then he himself flipped from Dem to Republican. He has said tough immigration enforcement is needed to remove criminal immigrants from our streets.
Speaking earlier this week about a Cape May County cop injured in a drunken driving crash Van Drew said was caused by a migrant in the U.S. illegally, Van Drew said, “When is enough enough?”
Trenton: Business groups and AI safety experts clashed in the Statehouse Monday over a four-bill package aimed at new regulations for artificial intelligence. Matt Lenz, public policy director for Meta, warned against putting AI firms on the hook for harms their technology causes. “We go through an exhaustive list to make sure that the models we release are safe and won’t cause any catastrophic harm. I don’t think we can predict use cases of everything, but making sure that that liability is on the appropriate downstream user so that we can still release open source models, I think, is really important,” he said.
Social media: The Sherrill administration has picked Rutgers University as the home of a new state-funded social media research center dedicated to examining the harms social media inflicts on young people. “If Washington won’t lead on keeping our kids safe from big tech, then New Jersey will,” Gov. Mikie Sherrill said Monday.
Weather: Oh, good: another nor’easter is headed our way.
D.C.: President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday establishing a Women’s Health Division within the National Institutes of Health and creating a White House Women’s Health Task Force that will be co-chaired by famed expert in women’s health, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
