Good morning!
I’m traveling for work so today’s newsletter will be short. Let’s get to it:
Delaney Hall: Tensions remained high Sunday night outside Newark migrant jail Delaney Hall, with police making an unknown number of arrests after Newark city officials implemented a 9 p.m. curfew in a push to tamp down protests there. Authorities chased some journalists away from the scene as cops arrested protestors (independent reporter Timmy Facciola claims reporters and protestors were not allowed to stand even in an area not covered by the curfew). Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Friday called for state troopers to help manage crowds and “cool things down.” Doesn’t appear to have worked, though family visitation resumed on Sunday for folks inside Delaney Hall (Sherrill said she pressured the Trump admin to reinstate visitation; the admin claims moving protesters farther from the facility is what led to the change).
Transit: Sunday was another fun one for NJ Transit train passengers, with suspended service on almost every rail line for an hour and then delayed for hours afterward, via Larry Higgs at NJ Advance Media. The agency blamed a fire at its rail operations center. Thirteen days until the World Cup!
Cannabis: Via Amanda Watford at Stateline, the federal government has changed its view on cannabis, but a broad divide between federal and state marijuana policy remains: “The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is set to hold its first hearing at the end of June on the possible de-scheduling of marijuana broadly, which would include recreational or adult-use cannabis. Until then, some experts say little is expected to change for the more than half of states with medical or recreational marijuana programs.”
