Budget deadline nears

Good morning!

It’s the last Friday in June, the state budget is still not done, the U.S. Supreme Court is on an absolute tear, and the U.S. lost to Turkey in a World Cup match in California last night. Let’s get to it:

Delaney Hall: Video from Sunday in front of Newark migrant jail Delaney Hall went viral over the weekend because it showed a car plowing into a protester just outside the detention center’s parking lot gate. This week, Newark announced it had charged the man driving the car, Thomas K, Brown, a jail worker, with assault by auto. Sophie Nieto-Muñoz got her hands on the criminal complaint, which shows Brown told police he was rattled when protesters started banging on his car as he went to work, so he accelerated to get away from them and drove into one (he told cops he didn’t see her).

Health: Via Lilo Stainton, “Nearly 30% of adult women under age 50 in New Jersey did not get the reproductive healthcare they needed in recent years, according to new survey data designed to measure the impact of the federal effort to limit access to reproductive healthcare in the U.S.”

Budget: Gov. Mikie Sherrill and the Legislature must agree on a budget in the next four days, but we have yet to see the document and by all accounts it still doesn’t exist. Looking forward to another last-minute dash to June 30 at 11:59 p.m. so the state government doesn’t shut down!

SCOTUS: The U.S. Supreme Court sure had a busy day Thursday, releasing a slew of decisions in some very high-profile cases. One of them, a big win for the Trump administration, allows it to turn away asylum seekers who present themselves at ports of entry at the U.S.-Mexico border. Another lets the administration move forward with its plans to strip temporary legal status from 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians, a move that opens them up to deportation. Yet another kills a Hawaii gun restrictions law that required people to get permission to carry guns onto private property.
