Blame game in Roxbury

The Trump administration’s decision to resurrect its plan to build a massive migrant detention center in Roxbury was front and center at the Morris County town’s council meeting last night.

Mayor Shawn Potillo told residents that no one on the council has any idea why the White House decided to reverse course and move ahead with the migrant jail just weeks after saying the plan was dead.

One of Potillo’s colleagues, Councilman Jim Rilee (R), pinned the blame on Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D), saying she shouldn’t have crowed when the feds last month said they were abandoning the idea of a Roxbury detention center.

“The governor did a dance, an anti-Trump dance, in the end zone, to celebrate her victory,” Rilee said. “And now the ICE facility is back on.”

A Sherrill spokesman could not be reached to comment.

Courts: The family of Victoria Lee, the Fort Lee woman shot and killed by police two years ago, is suing Fort Lee and a group of police officers for wrongful death. The family says Lee was experiencing a mental health crisis the night of her killing, and that they called 911 to get her medical help, not armed police officers. Body-cam footage shows police forcing Lee’s apartment door open and then Lee approaching them with a knife in her hand. “Victoria was in need of mental health services. Instead, she received a law-enforcement only response — and it ultimately killed her,” the complaint states.

Poll: Assembly lawmakers last month OK’d a bill to make it easier for movie theaters to sell booze by creating a special, lower-priced liquor license for them. A new poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University says most voters, regardless of party, oppose liquor sales at movie theaters. “Voters just seem to be very skeptical of changes to liquor licenses, even relatively small ones like this,” said Dan Cassino, executive director of the FDU Poll. “This is a big deal for theater owners, but there isn’t any appetite in the public for having alcohol more available.”

Food: Michigan health officials have identified lettuce or salad greens as a potential culprit in the nationwide outbreak of intestinal illness cyclospriasis, Anna Claire Vollers from Stateline reports. The feds put the number of cases here in New Jersey at 80 tops, compared to 900 tops in Michigan. I think the Garden State diet is helping to keep us out of the woods on this; who is putting lettuce on a Taylor ham, egg, and cheese?

Congress: In one of the more bone-headed decisions made in D.C. in recent years, the House passed a bill Tuesday that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent, a change I’m convinced people support because they think Congress can legislate more sunshine in winter months. New Jersey’s delegation split in a weird way, with Republicans Tom Kean Jr. and Chris Smith joining Dems Donald Norcross and Bonnie Watson Coleman in opposition.
